Vintage Find 7/20

I've been searching for more Paint-By-Numbers for the wall in the living room and I finally found another that I love! I had went with the family to an antique mall where I found a few awesome pieces but they were way over priced or not the style I was looking towards. A few weeks later I went out shopping with my Mom and we decided to check out a local antique store and stumbled upon this beauty plus it was at a great price!

Here it is hanging up but I think it needs something else, maybe some more smaller PBN to go underneath it?  What are some of your recent finds?

Vintage Finds 5/4

I haven't been thrifting in forever since I don't have room for any furniture and I'm content with my current collections. Though I want to build up on some of my other ones I just don't have the room to display the things like I like so until then I was taking a break. However, I went to the thrift store with my Mom and scored some wedding stuff :)

Our wedding colors are being pulled from different shades of blue, red and yellow. The dessert tier was in perfect condition and the set of cloth napkins would be perfect for making a banner. I want to collect more for banners and to put on top of the dessert bar.
My Mom had these beautiful goblets and even though I have room for them now I eventually want to use them in my future house. Until then I thought they'd fit perfectly on the tables for the wedding, maybe with succulents in them or a small bouquet. It's a set of 6 so I can use these and maybe throw in a few milk glass vases to mix up with the vintage soda bottles with single or filler flowers.
This is the gem of the finds but I can't take the credit for finding it. As I mentioned before my Mom and her husband run a little antique store, he was doing some picking and found this type writer. He fixed the ribbon and I started working on it some more cleaning it and making it type better. I told him how awesome it was and he said I could have it! It was sweet of him and I now have it running pretty good it just sticks on a few keys. I still need to clean off the keys some more but it's in great condition for being used.

I'm posting most of my wedding stuff via tumblr on Future Mrs. Cooper so feel free to check that out for some great ideas and current updates!

Decor | Thrifting 101

With a new year comes new resolutions and one of the biggest I have seen is trying to save money. Thifting is a great option to keep your wallet on track but so many people give up after a few unsuccessful tries. This is something I wrote about for Amy's Thrifting 101 Series about how to thrift for the home with some additional tips to help you get around the thrift store and save you money!

Dress The Part: When you go thrifting don't forget to dress the part and be prepared to get dirty. Now some places are neater than others but most places are just old buildings with dust and dirt on the items. I honestly think they are the best but I always remember to wear my older and more comfortable attire. Also bring hand-sanitizer for when you leave.

Look At The Display: Half the time that golden piece is displaying a tacky lamp or other item. This is actually how I found my small credenza. Check out the item for a price tag and if you don’t see one simply ask how much. Most of the time if they do not want to sell the item there will be a sign letting you know it is display only.

Don’t Dismiss Ugly Things: If the piece has great bone structure but has an ugly paint job or fabric don’t dismiss it as junk. If you have the time and resources to fix it up then get it! This is great for D.I.Y projects and it helps to bring more of your personality into the room.

Smell It First: Sounds odd but just like buying thrifted clothing be sure the piece does not smell bad. This is real important for furniture made from solid wood. If there is any evidence of the item being in a smoker’s house chances are when the wood naturally expands that smell will be more potent.

Bring Measuring Tape: There are obvious items that you do not have to measure but if you are trying to fit things through doors or placing them in between spaces, it is important to measure before buying. Consider measuring the height and depth of the item too. A vintage side table might be too short to use as a nightstand or the depth of that retro credenza may not be big enough to hold your television or game system on top. Keeping a note pad with original measurements prevents you from getting height and width numbers mixed up.

Needle and Thread: Sometimes items such as clothing needs a little t.l.c and help with a thread and needle. I find thrift stores to be great options to buy fabric for cheap and reuse it for something else. I have seen many bloggers take an ugly long skirt and bring it more up to date with a simple sewing of the hem. If you are extremely handy with the sewing machine consider re-purposing the item and make a totally new
style out of the old fabric.

Know When To Splurge: This is very important especially to keep you on your budget. Sometimes you are looking for a certain style and you haven't come across it, then sitting in the corner is the beautiful piece but they want way to much. When is it okay to walk away? It's very hard and there were pieces that were so close that I would have paid twice as much. However when you could use that money for something more beneficial (i.e rent & groceries) it's okay to let that one go.

Sit On It: Just like any furniture store, you want to make sure the chair or sofa will work for you. Something that you think looks great may sit way to low to the ground or is too big to sit in. Even if you plan to get it reupholstered, you do not want to spend that kind of money on a piece that is awkward to sit or get up in.

Know Your Thrift Stores: Certain thrift stores cater to certain types of items. Most stores do carry furniture and décor but some have more variety and greater prices compared to others. It is important to figure which ones do and do not carry the style you want so you can use it to your advantage. This makes searching for a certain piece of furniture a bit easier.

It’s Okay To Replace Things:When it comes to vintage decor and furniture sometimes the frames, knobs or buttons can be plain tacky. If it is worth the cost and the piece can easily be removed buy a new frame, knobs or buttons for it. You can always check out the dollar store for updated replacement items at a lower cost.

It’s Okay To Buy New: Thrift stores sometimes carry newer items (marked down from popular stores) but no need to feel guilty for buying new. When you find something with the sticker price still on it that just makes it more exciting that you found the item at such a great deal and condition. You are not turning your back on the thrifting world if you buy it unused.

Know How To Clean It: Either clothing or fabric on a chair you need to know the best ways to clean it. For clothing always check the tag to figure out what fabric it is, if there isn't one best way to go is hand wash. I recently bought a chair that I wanted to make sure got a good cleaning. I didn't have a fabric cleaner so I poured dry laundry detergent and let it set for a few hours then vacuum it up. Afterwards I gave it a generous spray of Fer-breeze to be extra sure!

Don't Be Afraid to Ask: Don't be afraid to ask for a lower price or haggle but do it nicely. Certain places encourage it where others may not, but think of it this way all they can say is no they can't deny you purchasing it after you asked for a lower price.

Come In The Right Vehicle: If you’re just looking for small home décor or clothing then driving in a small car is fine but when you are searching for bigger pieces make sure you have a vehicle that you can carry it home plus the proper straps to hold it down on its voyage to your house. We brought our turck with us when I was looking for items in the bedroom and we lucked out and found an antique dresser. Also see if they offer delivery, this came in handy when I underestimated the size of my small credenza and my tiny car.

Don’t Be Discouraged: Just like any shopping adventure don’t get discouraged if you don’t come home with your golden piece. Depending on what state you're from and the atmosphere of the store certain items are known to be popular than most. As far as I have noticed in the south not too many thrift stores know how popular Danish Modern is so you don’t stumble upon it too often and when you do it is at a steal. Keep looking and revisit your favorite thrift stores and you’ll eventually stumble upon your dream item.

Vintage Find 11/24

Ignore the mess but here is my chair of awesomeness that I got just the other day. I have not done much thrifting since I hardly ever have time with work and school. However, when I did squeeze time in I couldn't find anything, not even just random cute things to purchase. I'd check out a few places but my go to was a little thrift shop near the apartment which is where I saw this chair. The first time I saw it I liked the shape but knew I couldn't afford reupholstering it and couldn't imagine keeping the dingy fabric. A few weeks later it was still back there and I considered buying it because the color was nice and I could do some heavy duty cleaning but alas I talked myself out of it because I knew it was too big for my car. Yesterday le boyfriend and I went out for lunch and on our way back I asked if we could stop by the thrift store. I told myself if it was there that I would get it and as soon as I walked in there it was waiting for me up front. I asked the price (and should have haggled a little more) and bought it. I have already vacuumed the heck out of it but I was also going to pick up something else at the store for fabrics. So aside from my ocd with cleaning the fabric it's in really great condition. Now I just need to make room for it and I'll be a happy camper.

Also I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and got to spend some quality time with family and friends. Classes start up again this week so I might not be on here much but have a great week :)

Vintage Find

I know it's been quite boring over here since school started but I thought I'd share the most ultimate awesome find. It's been months since I found some real good pieces and I lucked out last Saturday at the thrift store.

Paint by numbers set!!

It's pretty sweet and the frame is in excellent condition. Also it is one of the scenes I've been looking for on ebay and etsy plus I got them both for under $5. Now I just need to find a space to put these beauties up!

Today in class we made our chocolate boxes an mine didn't turn out nearly as great as I wanted it (I'll post pictures later). So many little things went wrong but I got a decent grade on it. Tomorrow is my practical which is a written test and to finish a specific praline recipe we worked on in class today. I'm so nervous but yet so relieved this class is almost over!!

Vintage Finds

Hi! I know I've been kind of boring the last few days but I have been having some bad insomnia lately. I've been trying to lay down before it gets too late but I still can't sleep. Then for some awful reason my body wants me to wake up at 6 or 7 am even though I didn't go to bed until 3 or 4 am! So I end up sleeping too long an next thing I know its time for work. I doubt you all really want to know about my crazy sleeping schedule.

I had asked for Sunday morning off and was considering checking out the local flea market and ended up with my Mom and her husband going to two flea markets. The first one was tiny but I found a good couple of things.

$1 Chimney Rock Souvenir Tumbler (I can use for the bathroom design)
$1 Set of Witch Salt & Pepper Shakers for Halloween :)
$0.50 Set of 4- 5inch table legs

The second flea market was much bigger, really crowded and it had already started to get hot. So we just walked around, grabbed some nachos, and browsed the outside covered tents. Mom found a blue Ball Jar but aside from that we didn't get any other good finds.

Monday I had the whole day off and after being unsuccessful at getting rid of some old clothing earlier that morning I went with Mom to Michael's Craft Store and Ross's.  Per usual I tried on a lot of things that looked so adorable on the hanger but not on me, however, I did find some really nice wine/maroon colored skinny jeans to match a silky scarf style open cardigan I got earlier that day. Next was Michael's where my main objective was to get some Halloween decor. And they had plenty of it, if only I had that kind of money/room but I came home with some good pieces. I picked up some "freaky fabric" as the label calls it but looks kind of like eerie cheese cloth, some spiders to hang on to the fabric, a small skull RIP headstone figurine and a DIY bat banner kit.
I put the banner together yesterday and tried to hang it up. I was too short on the step stool to hang up the ends so I volunteered Dustin to help hang it up. My plan was to hang up the ends then  hang them up at two more points but with everything in the way he couldn't reach but so far. I'm hoping to get a step ladder very soon that is a lot taller and I can get the bat banner up a bit higher. I'm so excited to be decorating for Halloween :) Has anyone else started decorating for Halloween or Fall?

I Love Maps

I went to Michael's and got a poster frame on sale to hang up my free vintage map I got last Saturday. I think it looks amazing and is a great addition to the vintage wall. Though I think I'm just going to wait until I get more pieces before I start to hang everything else back up. It just seems I keep taking things down when I  get a new piece and have to rehang everything. Once I get the rest of the pieces for it I'll hang everything back up and it should be finished! Alright I need to finish getting ready for school I have term projects due this week.

Vintage Finds

Today I went to this estate sale (it wasn't exactly that but it's the best way to explain it) where I got a few awesome pieces for a great price. My grandpa was told about this women selling  some old furniture from her Mom's house who passed away last year at 101. There wasn't much furniture left and no credenza but what I did get was pretty great.
Vintage Jar of Buttons $0.25

Beautiful Floral Tray $1.00

Divided Snowflake Casserole Dish w/glass lid $4.00

Smokey Mountain Map (N.C & VA) never opened FREE

After not finding furniture at the first place my grandpa and I stopped by a thrift store that had just opened up. It was more of an odds and ends shop with new and old items. I didn't find much but I got a cute mood ring and this nesting doll. Sadly I thought there were a few more whole pieces but when I checked it again it was just the top of one and the bottom of another piece.
Hunting Fox Nesting Doll $1.00

I'm hoping to get the map framed and use it for my antique collage but I'm still looking for my paint by numbers and of course the mid century credenza/sideboard.

Vintage Finds

Earlier this week I went with my Mother and her husband to this place that was basically a giant yard sale in an old Lowes building.
As interesting as this place was I didn't get as much stuff from here as I expected. Though I did spot an awesome coffee maker for my Mom's shop..it just needs some fixing but it looked awesome. Anyway I did pick up a few mugs to fill out my shelf, a cork board for the refrigerator, and a neat little clip board.
I rotated the picture but for some reason it won't upload that way
The store didn't have prices on things so you basically just show them what you have and they give you an estimate. I got all this for $1 and with all proceeds going to the church's mission trips I donated $2 to them.
Also for your enjoyment:
I told Derrick (my Mom's husband) it looked like she was riding in one of those swan shaped peddle boats.

Vintage Finds

Last night my boyfriend and I spent some quality time with my family. We went out to eat at one of our favorite local restaurants and being as the only place to "shop" in town is Walmart we headed over there to walk off our meal. When we were done we went to my Mom's house so Dustin could work on a computer. while there she let me pick through some of her vintage items that she was still rummaging through for her etsy shop Red Rover Retro.
The box had a lot of stuff that would sell and wouldn't and I got my pick of a pumpkin container, a plate that matches some I already have (this one had a manufacturer chip), and a french press that was not so vintage. Then as I was telling her how I have been looking for vintage knobs for the dresser (particularly the round spheres) she pulls out a ziplock of the old knobs that use to be on the kitchen cabinets. They were exactly what I was looking for!!
For the moment I'm just going to line the drawers with some pretty Martha Stewart brand shelf paper just so I can get those closes on the right out of baskets. Later on through I want to sand it down the whole dresser and stain it a lighter shade.
Total cost: $0.00 I think I had a great day yesterday.

Also as I mentioned my Mom has an etsy shop where she sells vintage housewares at a great price. She and her husband has found some really amazing vintage pieces. The shop has only been up for about a month but she has a lot of items to offer. Feel free to check out her shop and leave a comment about your favorite piece :)

Vintage Finds

This isn't a vintage find that I stumbled upon  but more of a gift from my Mother. I did find one of these guys at the thrift store for $1 but he needed to be repainted and it would have cost too much to get his other half. My Mom found these on one of her finds and was going to give it as a gift. She noticed one of the tales was missing so she gave it to me early instead.

As you can see I've yet again moved the antique wall around. I had a paint by numbers, which was my first, but it was winter theme and I just want a neutral one either mountain theme or in the wood kind of feel to it. If anyone is interested in a paint by numbers swap let me know! Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Vintage Finds

Another project and homework done and now a book report and two exams to go! I stayed up über late, well basically stayed up until morning then took an hour nap before going to school, to put the finishing touches on a business plan. As soon as I came home I went to bed and I'm not going to worry about starting things until tomorrow.

Anyway I wanted to share my vintage find from the end of last month. I went to Goodwill to find pieces for my witch costume but did not find much except for this wonderful embroidered photo for $2.

I haven't figured out where on my vintage wall collage I was going to put it so it's hanging where an old photo was. I think it'll go great with the two embroidered duck photos I got and when I find a non-winter theme paint by numbers I think all the colors will come together!

Also wanted to share my chalk board media center mural for Halloween before I change it out for Thanksgiving!

Hope everyone has a great weekend and I'll be back to my regular posts in two weeks!

Vintage Finds: 10/22/11

I have been fighting a cold this week but today I felt a bit better so I decided to check out this new thrift store that is located in the old thrift store I use to get good furniture (say that three times fast). They don't have as much stuff compared to the one before but they recently open it's understandable. They had great prices for huge pictures and even had a beautiful globe for $7. I was trying to spend less than $5 so I had to say no the globe but if I go back and it's still there then I'm getting it! Anyway back to my vintage find...

This carpet bag cat purse for only $1 :) There was a beautiful one with horses on it but the purses didn't have prices and I didn't want a huge surprise if they were more then a few dollars each. I might change a few things on it but it's huge and has plenty of space to put my junk it in. I like cats if you couldn't tell.
Well I need to finish another paper and then open for work. Hope you all are having a good weekend!
