Excuse the silly rock face on the right there
I was a three year seasoned veteran from '03-'05 for the Vans Warped Tour and now I can add another year to that badge! Sweet ol' Dustin bought me tickets for my birthday and we went on Monday with some of our friends. It started early in the morning and I had an amazing time it just seemed to have ended way too soon. We got there before they opened and got a 'Skip the Line' pass by bringing in canned foods for a good cause. As soon as we got in one of the bands our friend wanted to see, letlive, was up so we snagged a spot in the very front. We even got our photos taken by the record company, but you don't want to see the goof face I made there either. Eventually during the show, Dustin wanted to join his friend in the mosh circle, and we moved towards the back and hung out there. The lead singer was known for his crazy antics on stage and he definitely delivered.
Reel Big Fish
After them we saw Bring Me The Horizon, which I'm surprised we survived! Our friend told us how the crowd was always intense so Dustin and I decided to stay towards the back to avoid any mosh pits. We did a good job at not getting in one, but the crowd kept getting pushed further back as the pits got bigger. This would have been all good if there wasn't a metal fence behind up keeping up from moving. As intense and uncomfortably close we were to strangers it was a real adrenaline rush. After that we chilled out and caught Big D and The Kids Table, I got in the crowd and did a little skanking. Meanwhile Dustin kept getting pulled into the circle pit by a dude in a blue mohawk. He fell and got a nice boot mark on his calf, but as always someone made sure he got up before anything serious happened. One of my favorite shows was Billy Talent, again we managed to get up and close. I saw them in '04 and they were just as intense then as they were now. My throat was sore from singing along with them and it was completely worth it.
The main reason I was excited to go this year was to see Reel Big Fish play live. They're one of my favorite ska bands and they were so fun to watch. Everyone was pretty tired so we chilled in the back and enjoyed the music. From the back we saw a few crazy hippy guys really jamming out in their tye-dies and overalls, they were just as entertaining. Everyone was getting tired and we left after the show and even though I was a little sad because I wanted to stay (and I totally forget The Used were playing later) I didn't want to be that person to drag everyone around. Thinking back, my first visit was 10 years ago when I had just turned 13 and going back at 23 it was different, yet still the same. There were a few things I wished I had done like stayed longer, took more pictures, or had gotten some merchandise from the bands, but I still can't deny what a great time I had. I'm excited to see who is going to be part of the lineup next year and start going again!
Did any of you guys catch Vans Warped Tour in Charlotte? Who did you get to see?
